This article examines the role of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI) as an active agent in enhancing the pedagogical effectiveness of business simulations in higher education. Rather than functioning as a substitute for human learning, GAI is analysed under the premise of serving as a Cognitive Assistant (CA) that facilitates the development of higher-order skills, specifically Critical Thinking (CT) and Knowledge Transfer (KT). Through a cross-sectional descriptive study involving 260 undergraduate students enrolled in business-related programs, the research evaluates the impact of GAI on strategic decision-making processes within simulated business environments. The findings reveal high levels of agreement (M > 4.0 on a Likert scale) across key indicators of CT, including post-decision reflection and the review of previous choices, as well as KT indicators such as the application of theoretical models learned in the classroom to simulated scenarios. The results suggest that GAI reduces the cognitive burden associated with routine analytical tasks, enabling students to devote more time to strategic judgment, reflective thinking, and the correction of cognitive biases. Based on these findings, the study proposes a didactic integration framework to formalize the use of GAI in business simulations, transforming them into deeper, more reflective learning experiences that are closely aligned with the professional competencies required in contemporary business environments.
